Using the PikKit2 with Linux is straight forward with the pk2cmd supplied by Microchip (http://www.microchip.com/pickit2).

This example burns pwm.hex to a PIC16F690 and powers it up:

pk2cmd -PPIC16F690 -F pwm.hex -M -R -T -A5

The pk2cmd utility has a lot of options, list them all by running the utility with no options. Some handy ones are:

[edit] PIC Programmers

The two most popular PIC programmers by far are the PICkit 2 and PICkit 3 units from Microchip, which are available for approx USD $40 from microchipDIRECT [13] [14].

There is some debate in preference between the PICkit 2 and PICkit 3 units, in short; the PICkit 2 unit is more robust and easier to use, but lacks support for the latest devices and development environments. Whereas the PICkit 3 unit is safer to use (less chance of it causing damage to a chip/circuit) and has a wider range of supported devices, but is more expensive and uses a more involved debugging system.

[edit] Roll-Your-Own PICkit

The PICkit 2 and PICkit 3 units are infact a PIC microcontroller themselves (usually an 18f2550), which is setup as a USB device, a small local memory store, and has an interface to program target chips. The debugging protocols used by Microchip between the PICkit and the target device are not well documented (especially for the PICkit 3), and is one of the main reasons why using a PICkit is the #1 method for programming any PIC microcontroller.

Microchip also make the hex files and schematics available for the PICkit 2 units, enabling users to construct their own PICkit devices using any 18f2550 or 18f4550 chip, often available for <$5. The entire circuit can be constructed for <$20, and contains only simple parts most hobbyists will already have on hand.

This however leaves us with a chicken and egg problem; while we can make our own PICkit units, we still need to program the microcontroller for that unit. Thankfully we have a fallback here too. See "Poor Mans Programmer" below.

Once you have programmed the PICkit 2 hex file from Microchip [16] onto your device, you can switch the chip into Run mode (by putting 5v on the |MCLR pin), attach a 470nF capacitor between the VUSB pin and ground, and connect the D+/D- lines to a USB cable. The chip should be detected as a PICkit 2 and the Microchip PICkit 2 utilities will recognize the device.

The complete schematics for the PICkit 2 unit [17], contain a more advanced driver for the target chip's VDD (to handle auto-detection of the required voltage of a target device), and a charge pump to generate VPP from the +5v supplied by USB. This additional circuity is _REQUIRED_ for normal operation of the device.


[edit] Poor Mans Programmer

The freeware program WinPIC [18] (or many others) can be used to flash most older PICs (including the 18f2550 and 18f4550) over a simple serial or parallel interface. It effectively turns your PC's serial port into a fairly crippled PICkit 1, communicating directly with the target device.

The main problem with this method (apart from supporting many less devices), is that a PC's serial port uses both positive and negative voltage, and has a very wide range of allowed voltages; some common examples would be: (On/Off) -15v/+15v, -12v/+12v, -3v/+10v, -5v/+5v. So to interface a PC's serial port with a PIC we'll need to shift these voltage levels to something the microcontroller will accept. Most of the pins involved (PGM,PGC,PGD) are CMOS inputs that will expect 5v/0v signals, except for VPP, which requires > 9v to erase/flash the device.


The two main signal lines used are PGC (Program Clock) and PGD (Program Data). For these you can use any CMOS compatible RS232 Line Driver IC, like Maxim's MAX232A, or more simply a NPN transistor as a switch for each line.

This same method can be used for the PGM pin, which is used for low voltage programming when no 12v source is available. This can be a great time/space saver when building an on-board programmer into a device, but must be enabled in the chip's configuration bits, and so cannot be used to flash a chip direct from the factory. You can safely leave this out of your "bootstrap" design.


For the |MCLR/VPP signal you can use a NPN transistor, a 10-15v power supply, and a switch.

Since the VPP pin doubles as the |MCLR (reset) pin, we have 3 possible states: Program, Reset and Run. Two of these states (Program & Reset) can be driven from the serial port, to enter Run mode, the switch must be flicked.


Those watching carefully might note that the +15v used by some PC serial ports is in that 10-15 volt range for VPP ;) Yes, you can source VPP from the serial port in those cases, and it can work quite well, but it will be very specific to *that computer* and *that serial port*. Newer PCs tend to use -3v/+8v which won't be sufficient, and USB RS232 adapters mostly use -3v/+5v. I find it best to stick with a 12v DC unregulated plug pack, these will give you around 15-16v with little load, and can be easily regulated into the +5v and +12v your circuits may use.

Once your interface is built, open WinPIC and define an interface file for your new programmer. The Velleman K8048 is a good example ini file you can modify to suit your wiring. You are now ready to program many PIC microcontrollers directly from your serial port!
